Hey guys,

We won an AWARD!!! This past weekend we won the Special Jury Award for Feature Documentary film at the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival.

We didn’t have an opportunity to go to the festival, but we heard it was awesome! I’m super sorry we had to miss it now.

Hi Everyone!

I know it seems like we haven’t had much news lately, but we were waiting to announce something very exciting. WE ARE WIZARDS will be having its theatrical premiere at Cinema Village starting November 14th. The film will be running for a week (possibly longer) and we’ll have those dates out to you soon. The film is expected to open in multiple cities after its initial engagement at Cinema Village.

Brooklyn Underground Films presents the US theatrical release of WE ARE WIZARDS, a documentary film by Josh Koury. After its critically acclaimed premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, WE ARE WIZARDS went on to screen at the NY Underground Film Festival and Sarasota Film Festival, among others. This film will have its theatrical release at the Cinema Village in NYC on November 14, 2008. Other cities will follow.

Most people might not be aware that there is a raging Wizard Rock scene going on in this country. WE ARE WIZARDS profiles some of the power players in the underground Harry Potter creative community. The film offers a look at a seven-year-old rock star and his teen pop idols, hilarious audio-commentary set to the movie and online creative writing sites waging war with corporate agents.

The books’ themes of good versus evil and using inner strength to overcome challenges serve as a catalyst for many who face personal obstacles, or just to meet like-minded folk and have fun. It is staggering to learn of the different ways people touched by J.K. Rowling’s book series are honoring the characters and story with their own ideas, passion and talents. The Harry Potter mythos allows the nerdy, the average, the young, the downtrodden, and the bored a chance to borrow a little inspiration and step out of their respective worlds to be a part of something BIG. Not to say the aforementioned groups are lacking in talent. The fan arena is simply a staging ground for sharpening skills and surprising oneself with the results - much like the epic story of a boy wizard.

Featuring: Brad Neely, Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys, The Hungarian Horntails, Melissa Anelli, Heather Lawver.

About the director:

WE ARE WIZARDS is Josh Koury’s 2nd feature length documentary. His first film, STANDING BY YOURSELF, gained critical recognition after opening theatrically in 2002. Since then, Koury has worked diligently in the programming department of the Hamptons International Film Festival and as the Programming Director for the Brooklyn Underground Film Festival, an organization he co-founded with Myles Kane (editor of WE ARE WIZARDS) and Cristobal Moris. Josh is currently part of the film faculty at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn NY.

It’s all handled with such a beautiful balance, intermingling comedy and poignancy, that I surely hope it gets some steam coming out of The South by Southwest Film Festival.”
